Discover Verwood

Verwood is much more than just the place where we run our business, Verwood is the place everyone at Irving and Sons calls home

We live here, we work here, we love it here!

Verwood is a small town surrounded by forest, farmland and heathland that retains its “village feel” with a strong and vibrant community. Situated close to the New Forest on the border of Dorset & Hampshire, there are a number of shops, two supermarkets, a couple of pubs, takeaways, restaurants and coffee shops.

Verwood is strategically very well placed, with Bournemouth, with its famous sandy bay and holiday facilities only 15 miles to the south and within 10 minute’s drive to the west, is the New Forest market town of Ringwood. Cranborne Chase, the hunting ground of Kings, with some of the most stunning scenery in England is only a short drive to the North. Verwood enjoys superb transport links with the A31 trunk road providing easy access to the M3 leading to London with the cities of Salisbury and Southampton within approximately 30 minute’s drive.

Verwood, originally known as 'Fayrewood' was first recorded in 1329. The land, cleared in the Middle Ages for agriculture, was found to contain clay, and consequently a pottery industry developed. At one time there were over 30 kilns but the last commercial pottery ceased production in 1952 and today only three sites remain. Visitors can learn more of this local industry at the Verwood Heathland Heritage Centre.

Verwood Town Centre has a lovely Village Green with everyday shops, a cafe and a Costa coffee shop. The memorial hall with its adjacent recreation ground which incorporates a children’s play area and multi-use games arena.

Verwood is home to a host of clubs and societies and at the heart of our friendly & welcoming community is The Hub, opened in 2007 and which was designed and built at a cost of over £4M with huge community input. As well as having a bistro area The Hub provides a comprehensively fitted gym, 300 seat Merryfield Theatre, a 100 seat hall and a number of other smaller function rooms ideal for parties and group meetings. These facilities are used for films, plays, concerts and many other activities. In addition there is a sports hall located alongside Verwood First & Emmanuel Middle Schools.

Verwood also offers excellent outdoor facilities with Potterne Park providing 24 acres of community run sporting facilities including Rugby, Football, Tennis, Cricket and a Skate Park all served by a modern pavilion. Potterne Park is home to Verwood Town football club which caters for players of all ages https://www.vtfc.co.uk/.
